Reddit MCP

The Reddit MCP server for AI agents

Connect Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf or any MCP client to Reddit with one npx command. Open source, 14 read-only Reddit tools, one CiteRocket API key.

$ npx -y @citerocket/reddit-mcp@latest

Last updated 22 September 2026. Figures re-verified against npm and the live tool manifest on that date.

What is a Reddit MCP server?

A Reddit MCP server is a Model Context Protocol server whose tools read Reddit. When an MCP client such as Claude Desktop or Cursor starts it, the client discovers those tools and the model can call them mid-conversation: fetch a subreddit's top posts, search comments, pull a full comment tree or check an account's status. @citerocket/reddit-mcp is CiteRocket's open-source implementation. It runs on your machine under npx, loads its 14 read-only tools from a hosted manifest, and sends each call to the CiteRocket API with your key. You never create a Reddit OAuth app or file an application with Reddit; CiteRocket handles the Reddit side.

Official or third-party?

Is there an official Reddit MCP server?

Not that we, Google's AI Overview or Perplexity could find as of 22 September 2026. Reddit's developer platform does not publish one, so every Reddit MCP server, including this one, is third-party. Ours is built by CiteRocket on its own Reddit API rather than on Reddit's Data API.

Reddit API keys?

Does it need a Reddit developer app?

No. Most community servers need a Reddit app client ID and secret, and a username and password for full data or writes, which since November 2025 means applying to Reddit, and from 31 October 2026 Reddit no longer accepts new requests. This one needs a single CiteRocket key; the Reddit access happens on CiteRocket's side.

Free? On GitHub?

Is it free, and is the code on GitHub?

The server is free and MIT-licensed, published on npm with the source on GitHub. Tool calls spend CiteRocket credits: 1 credit per read, the account overview free, and 1,000 free credits at signup with no card.

Reddit MCP for Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor: setup

Local, not cloud: the server runs on your machine under npx and needs Node.js. The tools come from the hosted manifest, so there is nothing to build. Three steps.

  1. 01 / Key

    Sign up and copy your API key from the dashboard. It starts with cite_live_. Every account gets 1,000 free credits, no card.

  2. 02 / Config

    Add the server to your client's MCP config with the key in CITEROCKET_API_KEY. The JSON below is the same for Claude Desktop, Cursor and Windsurf.

  3. 03 / Restart

    Restart the client. The 14 tools appear in its tool list, and a prompt like "find the top posts in r/selfhosted this week" calls them.

MCP client config (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf)
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "citerocket": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@citerocket/reddit-mcp@latest"],
      "env": { "CITEROCKET_API_KEY": "cite_live_..." }
    }
  }
}
Reddit MCP in Claude Code: one command
claude mcp add citerocket -e CITEROCKET_API_KEY=cite_live_... -- npx -y @citerocket/reddit-mcp@latest

Config verbatim from the package README. Never commit a real key; keep it in the client config or your environment.

14 MCP Reddit tools, straight from the manifest

Names and descriptions below are copied from https://api.citerocket.com/mcp/manifest, which the server reads at startup. All are read-only.

  • get_postsFetch posts from a subreddit
  • get_post_by_idFetch one post by id
  • get_commentsA post's full comment tree
  • get_sub_by_name_topA subreddit's top posts
  • get_sub_by_name_infoSubreddit metadata, rules, moderators

Search

  • get_searchSearch posts across Reddit
  • get_search_commentsSearch comments
  • get_search_communitiesSearch communities
  • get_search_mediaSearch media
  • get_search_usersSearch users

Users

  • get_user_by_nameUser profile and karma
  • get_user_by_name_commentsA user's recent comments
  • get_user_by_name_statusAccount status check (active, suspended, banned)

Account

  • get_cite_rocket_overviewYour plan, credits, usage and billing in one free request

Need to comment or vote? Login, comment and vote are marked coming soon on the HTTP API and are not MCP tools. Because the server loads its list from the manifest, new tools appear without a reinstall.

Reddit MCP server examples: what an agent can ask

Anything the tools cover. Each prompt below maps to the manifest tool the model will call; the results come back as structured data the model can quote.

You askTool the model calls
"What are the top posts in r/selfhosted this week?"get_sub_by_name_top
"Find Reddit threads recommending a CRM for a small agency."get_search
"Summarise the discussion under this post."get_comments
"Which subreddits talk about home battery storage?"get_search_communities
"Is u/example still active or banned, and what have they posted recently?"get_user_by_name_status, get_user_by_name_comments
"How many credits do I have left?"get_cite_rocket_overview

How the MCP Reddit integration works

What the package does between your client and Reddit.

Manifest-driven

At startup the server fetches the tool list from the hosted manifest and falls back to a bundled copy if the API is unreachable. Its only dependency is the official MCP SDK.

Your key, your usage

Every tool call is one HTTP request to api.citerocket.com with your key as a Bearer token, metered in credits and visible in your dashboard. A read costs 1 credit.

Open source, MIT

The server is MIT-licensed on GitHub. Read the code, fork it, or pin a version. It was published on 12 September 2026.

Which Reddit MCP server should you use?

It depends on what the agent must do. @citerocket/reddit-mcp gives full read data on every tool with one CiteRocket key and no Reddit approval. Community servers on Reddit's Data API can post or edit from your own account, but need Reddit app credentials, which since November 2025 means applying to Reddit.

Competitor rows are from the projects' own READMEs on GitHub, read 22 September 2026: reddit-mcp-buddy and jordanburke/reddit-mcp-server. Reddit's free tier is 100 requests per minute with OAuth, verified 2026-09-16; the approval requirement is from Reddit's November 2025 announcement. Both projects are good work; the difference is where the Reddit credentials live.

When to use the Reddit MCP server, and when not to

A good fit when

  • Your agent runs in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf or another MCP client and needs to read Reddit.
  • You want Reddit as typed tools without writing an integration, an OAuth app or an application to Reddit.
  • You are researching, monitoring or summarising: top posts, threads, comment trees, communities, users.
  • You want the tool list to grow without reinstalling, because it comes from the manifest.

Not the right fit when

  • The agent must post, comment or vote from inside MCP. Those are planned HTTP API operations, marked coming soon, not MCP tools.
  • You need historical Reddit archives. The tools read live data; see the Pushshift alternatives guide.
  • You need more than 50 requests per second, the current top plan ceiling.
  • You are not using an MCP client at all. Call the HTTP API directly instead.

What is the Model Context Protocol?

MCP is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic, that lets AI models connect to external tools and data through one interface. A server describes its tools; any MCP client can call them. A Reddit Model Context Protocol server is simply one whose tools read Reddit.

No MCP client? Same tools over HTTP

Every MCP tool is a documented endpoint. Here is the search tool as a plain request, with the same key.

curl: the same call as get_search
curl "https://api.citerocket.com/api/reddit/search?q=best+crm&sort=top" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $CITEROCKET_API_KEY"

Reddit MCP server FAQ

Yes, several, all third-party. @citerocket/reddit-mcp is CiteRocket's: an open-source Reddit MCP server with 14 read-only tools that runs under npx and needs only a CiteRocket key. Community servers on GitHub work directly against Reddit's Data API and need Reddit app credentials for full access.

Claude Desktop: add @citerocket/reddit-mcp to the mcpServers section of claude_desktop_config.json with your key in CITEROCKET_API_KEY, then restart. Claude Code: run the one-line claude mcp add command in the setup section. Both run the server locally under npx; nothing is hosted in the cloud for you to connect to.

Not from MCP. Every tool in the current manifest is read-only; login, commenting and voting are planned HTTP API operations, marked coming soon in the docs. Voting and karma manipulation are prohibited by our acceptable use policy and by Reddit's rules regardless of the route, so no vote tool will be added to the MCP server.

No. The server authenticates with a single CiteRocket API key set in the CITEROCKET_API_KEY environment variable. CiteRocket handles Reddit access behind it; there is no OAuth app to create and no application to Reddit.

The package is free and open source under the MIT licence, on npm and GitHub. Tool calls spend credits from your CiteRocket plan: a read costs 1 credit, the account overview is free, and per-plan rate ceilings apply (2 QPS free, 10, 25, 50 QPS on paid plans). New accounts start with 1,000 free credits and no card.

It depends on what the agent must do. For reads without Reddit credentials or approval, with full data on every tool, use @citerocket/reddit-mcp. For posting or editing from the agent with your own Reddit account, jordanburke/reddit-mcp-server supports that with user credentials. The comparison table on this page lists the verified differences.

Yes. Every tool maps to a documented HTTP endpoint, so the same capabilities work with OpenAI function calling, Claude tool use, LangChain, or a plain fetch from your own agent loop.
